A Manufacturer of Writing Instruments - Mexico
Develop a Strategy to Implement Lean Manufacturing


The Challenge:

  • Manufacturing was "old" style in layouts, machinery and organization.

The Approach:

  • Formed three teams to develop and implement the Lean Manufacturing strategy.
  • Utilized Value Stream Mapping methodology.
  • The Plan was developed in four days.


The Solution:

  • Concentrated on three different writing instruments that covered 75% of the plant production processes.
  • Developed Current State maps and Future State maps of the areas.


The Results:

The plan calls for:

  • Area One will reduce 33% of the workforce and 60% of the inventory Area output will improve by 16%.
  • Area Two will form six cells and reduce 52% of the workforce. Inventories and space will be reduced also.
  • Area Three Unit cost down by 7.0%, Productivity improvement of 37%. Savings $1,000,000 US.
